What's Actually Working in Auto Detailing Marketing Right Now
The full playbook behind a Seattle detail shop's turnaround. Voice AI, a Booking Engine, Google Ads, reviews, SEO, and repeat customers, with the real revenue numbers for each.
This article is not theory. It’s the documentation of what is currently working for an auto detail business in Seattle.
My name is Jason, and I’m the person who runs the marketing and tech side for Derek’s Auto Detail.
When I came on board with Derek, the company had sort of been stumbling along for years. No growth at all over the previous 5 years, and completely lost when it came to their digital marketing.
He had been working on his Wix website for a little bit and was starting to gain a little bit of traction. But looking back, Derek would be the first one to tell you, he was over his head with the digital stuff.
You start a detailing business because you are passionate about detailing cars and making them look amazing.
But the reality of any business, is there is a whole other side which is customer acquisition.
There is no shortage of talented detailers.
However, most detailers are struggling because their marketing systems are either nonexistent, or they just aren’t nearly as good as they can be.
This article isn’t about one specific thing.
It’s about ALL the things we’ve been doing over at Derek’s that has helped them go from stalled, to being at full capacity and bringing in more techs to service more customers than they’ve ever had.
What changed? Honestly… Everything. And that’s what I’m going to cover.
Traffic was never the problem
Google Ads, SEO, Google Business Profile, Facebook ads, social media posting.
None of these are what makes or breaks the marketing campaign. These are all traffic sources, and they are all important.
However, for the most part, traffic isn’t really the issue.
Traffic is easy to come by.
Before even thinking about how you get people to your website, first it starts with what’s the whole purpose of a website in the first place?
Most of your competitors think of their website as an afterthought. And quite frankly, it’s very easy to beat them because of this.
Winning with digital marketing for a detail business is all about making it easy for someone to schedule with you. Removing the friction.
If you’re a small detail operation or a solo operation, there’s a high likelihood you don’t answer the phone 100% of the time.
That’s exactly why paying money to advertise isn’t the best move if your customers need to talk to you first in order to schedule a service.
With Derek we are spending more than $300 a day in Google advertising now, however if we would have started advertising from the very first day to his old website, it would have been a complete disaster.
Same could be said for optimizing his Google Business Profile. Or working on his SEO.
Even if all of those were handled, if he misses the calls when he gets more calls, what’s the purpose?
Answer 100% of the calls. Immediately.
We’ve done a whole lot of things with Derek’s marketing and his setup. But the one thing that has provided the most value out of all of it has been making sure 100% of the calls get answered. Immediately.
And we did that by removing them from it.
Like it or not, AI is here to stay. And there are some uses of AI that are legitimate good uses for a small detail business owner.
One of those is voice AI. Which is another term for having a digital answering service that can act as a sales person for your business.
You might be questioning whether or not AI is going to make you look bad or not. Rightfully so, because that’s honestly the same concern we had.
To be honest, when we first installed Voice AI we didn’t know what to expect.
Would people get upset? Would they hang up?
After 1,478 phone calls, the answer is it provides far more value than it does any reason to not employ it.
As a business it’s hard to quantify how much money we lose by not answering the phone. But I can say it’s far more than it costs to employ an AI agent that can answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Never gets sick. Never has a bad day. Never takes it personally when the customer on the other line is having a bad day.
The agent’s job is simple.
- Answer the phone.
- Help people get pricing on the services.
- Schedule them or send them to the shop if they need more help.
Sometimes people don’t want to talk to an AI and want to get transferred. Cool. We transfer them.
But the majority of people like the simplicity of being able to schedule right at that moment. They don’t need to talk to anyone.
They already know what they want. They just need to get scheduled.
And that’s been the biggest needle mover overall for Derek. Because all those missed calls, are now getting captured.
People who call at night, or on weekends when they’re closed. They don’t need to stress about answering the phone.
But on its own Voice AI is just part of the overall solution.
That captures a segment of people but not everyone even wants to pick up the phone to call you.
That’s the second part.
From website to Booking Engine
Everything we do is about making it easy for people to schedule. Removing the human element or quite frankly, the bottleneck.
Derek’s website went from just typical website, to Booking Engine.
What is a Booking Engine?
A Booking Engine is like a digital sequence of events we bring website visitors through, educate them on our services, and help them schedule.
It’s like the Voice AI, but this is for the people who hit the website and don’t need or want to call.
This is the foundation of everything else.
When someone lands on the website, everything points them into the Booking Engine.
And instead of our website just collecting leads, which we’d have to follow up with and call. The Booking Engine schedules them on the spot immediately.
Then the shop is calling to confirm an appointment, instead of calling and hoping to get someone on the phone.
Let’s be honest. Most people aren’t going to work their leads. Even if their website is producing them.
Getting a lead and working it, is just not needed in 2026 for a detailing business. In fact, it’s probably one of the biggest reasons most detailers struggle to grow.
Maybe you’ll call it one or two times. But if they don’t answer the call, it’s basically a big waste.
And that’s one of the big reasons advertising on Facebook or Google won’t work if you don’t fix this first.
You’ve got to be able to remove yourself from the scheduling process, or more leads just means more work.
Foundation first. Then traffic.
The Booking Engine and the Voice agent are the foundational moves.
It’s literally the chicken or the egg.
Because there is a good likelihood you don’t have a whole lot of traffic yet to your website. So the website isn’t as important.
If you don’t have traffic, you have no need for a website or a voice agent. Because you don’t have any leads.
That’s where Google Ads comes in.
Google Ads without a Booking Engine is a bad idea. Google Ads with a Booking Engine is a cash flow printer.
Keep in mind, this is just one of many things. It’s part of a machine, not the entire machine. For most detailers, it’s the fastest way to making money today.
The thing about Google Ads, is as you run them longer, they become more and more consistent.
The hardest part is the beginning, when you have a new account.
At the start, you’ll have no history.
But you can keep it very targeted to pick only a single keyword to target.
For example, if you want to get more interiors, just target people who are specifically looking for “mobile interior car detailer near me” or “interior car detail shop near me”.
We make landing pages specifically for each search phrase we target.
As time has gone on, we’ve added more keywords and location pages.
But what’s great about Google is you can start with a single keyword and immediately start getting eyeballs on your offers.
No waiting for ranking.
Doesn’t matter whether your Google Business Profile is optimized.
You can immediately start getting business (if done well).
The Google Ads math
Let’s run through some math because I’m sure you’re probably thinking about how profitable is it.
When we started, Derek was nervous about spending $40 a day. Because up until that point he had never run Google Ads, and of course he’s worried about losing his money.
But that’s part of running a business. You got to be willing to invest into growth or else you’ll stay stuck forever.
I am not a fan of blindly spending.
But if you’re spending money, and it’s producing more money, keep going.
Here’s the secret.
Yes, we want to make as much as we can on the front end.
But we’re playing the long game and we already know the money is made by getting people to come back for that 2nd and 3rd appointments.
Google creates the relationship. And it’s on us to put systems together that can keep in touch with people to get them back in the door.
People get their car detailed in some cases quarterly.
The first appointment is an opportunity for us to set them up on the 2nd appointment.
And that’s where the big money is to be made as time goes by from here.
The review flywheel
But we aren’t stopping at just doing Google Ads.
What we’ve also done is optimized the Google Business Profile.
We’ve submitted his business to all the online directories, which strengthens his Google Business Profile.
But most importantly, we get reviews every single day from people coming into the shop.
It’s part of the fabric of the business now.
They went from getting 3-4 reviews in a good month. To getting 3-4 reviews in a 2 day period.
Here’s why that matters.
Google reviews are the trust signals of the internet. Google looks at them, and uses the words the customers use in their reviews to figure out what you’re all about.
So when someone is searching for mold removal near me, they’re now showing up because people are leaving reviews talking about how Derek’s team helped them get mold out of their car.
It’s like a flywheel that fuels all our SEO efforts.
New reviews let Google know we’re actively in business. And it helps build the social proof, which is the actual real currency of the internet.
Because isn’t that what it’s all about anyways?
If you can trust the company you’re researching to do a good job on a service you’re looking for, it’s easier for you to make a buying decision right?
The same goes for your business.
Every single job needs to end in a review or at the very least an attempt at getting it. The easiest way to do that is to build some automations, but nothing is as effective as personally asking for it.
Derek’s reviews come both from Jay, the shop manager, and automated messages that go out to their email and text.
Now Derek’s business profile is ranking better than it ever has. Giving them more real estate between Google Ads, and the Google Business Profile.
Bringing their blended cost to acquire a new customer way down.
So far Derek’s Google Business Profile has generated another $24,753. But it’s only one part of the “free” traffic we’re converting.
SEO. Painfully slow. Wide open.
The next part of the machine is making sure their website was positioned right.
And in the beginning it wasn’t even close.
They had no location pages, they had service pages, but they were thin. Meaning there wasn’t much to them. Not enough for Google to trust or rank.
So not only did we create the Booking Engine but we made sure the website was up to standards with Google SEO best practices.
Part of the battle with SEO is just making sure the pages are structured right.
- We created service pages for all services.
- We optimized them for the locations they provide the services.
- And we submit those pages to Google using a sitemap.
There are hundreds or thousands of posts on the internet about SEO. Yet almost none of your competitors do it, because it’s like watching paint dry.
It’s painfully slow, but there is absolutely nothing that gets you the ROI good SEO is going to get you.
Here’s all the sources that us fixing the SEO has generated booked jobs from.
| Source | Booked jobs generated |
|---|---|
| $24,083 | |
| Bing | $4,277 |
| DuckDuckGo | $2,597 |
| ChatGPT | $797 |
On their own, none of these channels are enough to carry the company.
But each of these has gotten better every single month and we’re only 4 months in at this point.
Like I said it’s like watching paint dry, but long term the ROI is well over 100:1.
Meaning every $1 we put into SEO (building backlinks), ends up producing 100x in revenue.
It’s wide open because almost nobody is patient enough to do it, nor do most of your competitors even know how to do it.
Repeat customers. Where the money is made.
The last element is probably the one almost none of your competitors are focusing on. I’ve already touched on it earlier in the article but it deserves its own section.
Getting people to come back for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th appointment, is where the money is made.
Here’s what’s working for us, and what we’re adding.
What’s working?
We email the list of customers at least 1 time per week.
We usually pick up a few detail jobs just from people who were already on the list.
On top of that it keeps us top of mind for the customers who regularly check their email.
They save those emails. They bookmark the website. And when they’re ready, they visit the website and book.
Almost all of that is going through the Booking Engine or re-scheduling using the Voice agent.
Some of them still like to talk to Jay, and he’s happy to help them schedule.
But now instead of Jay being interrupted all day every day by incoming calls, he’s able to work with the techs at the shop and make sure people are happy with the service.
Jay has been able to remove himself as the person holding it all together, to now being able to get those reviews and grow the team.
The machine, not the parts
And none of this would work if it weren’t for the high level of tracking they’re doing.
All of these things are great and all, but the problem you get with most marketing agencies is they’ll work on fixing one of these things. Not fix all of these things.
And worse, they can’t ever tell you what’s working or why it’s not working.
They’ll sell you on the idea that you need traffic or leads, when in reality the number one place to look is at your booking process.
If you have a website that doesn’t pass the 10 pm on Friday test, you can fix that first. That’s going to be the highest leverage move you have.
But beyond that, a good Booking Engine on its own won’t do anything for you if you’re not marketing it aggressively.
But having a good Booking Engine, makes all of your existing marketing more effective. Because you give people the outlet they need to be able to learn about your services, in a way that works for them. While removing yourself as your own bottleneck which is where the growth begins.
